Doctors inject botox into womb to treat cramps

7.20am Wednesday November 29, 2006

SYDNEY - A drug famed for smoothing women's wrinkles may soon be soothing their period pain too.

In a world-first trial at Sydney's Royal Hospital for Women, doctors have begun injecting Botox into the womb of women with severe and prolonged monthly cramps.

Up to 10 per cent of fertile women suffer from period pain, when the uterus contracts erratically and "fights" against itself.

Professor Thierry Vancaillie from the department of endo-gynaecology said anecdotal evidence seems to show the toxic bacteria botulinum toxin can paralyse the region and bring relief.

"Like it works on the face, we believe if you inject Botox into the uterus it relaxes the muscles by stopping the nerves from working," Prof Vancaillie.

"It's really logical but it hasn't been tried yet which is amazing."

Botox is most widely used for cosmetic purposes but has also been shown to be effective in treating cerebral palsy, neck and facial spasms, chronic migraine, incontinence and chronic sweating.

I am sorry to read this, and I am even more sorry to state that I think this is, by far, the most stupid and dangerous "treatment" I ahve ever heard of. The real danger of botox is not to be minimized, and to inject it into the uterus is, in my opinion, irresponsible.
I do not mean to rant. I do like your blog and I do appreciate this information. But it is NOT a wise choice. Again to go into my specialty, what type of cramps? Are the before, during or after the onset of her period? What about clots, color of menstrual blood? Thickness of blood and amount? All of these are very important, and has she tried complimentary medicine such as acupuncture and Chinese Herbs. Particularly in Australia the herbs are held to beyond pharmaceutical level of purity, and we know what the side effects are. What are the side effects of introducing botulism (which is what botox is made from)into the uterus.

OK, I am sorry. I will get off my soap-box. But this one got me steamed.
